TEHRAN: Following recent U.S. airstrikes, Iran has indicated it may withdraw from the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

Iran had qualified for the tournament for the fourth consecutive time, finishing first in their Asian qualifying group. However, Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj stated that participation in the tournament appears difficult under the current circumstances.

Iran is scheduled to play its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles in 107 days.

Meanwhile, officials from FIFA said they are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing that ensuring a safe World Cup remains their top priority.

Iran has been placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. If both Iran and the United States finish second in their respective groups, they could face each other on July 3 in Dallas.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
