Israel Approves Plan to Seize Gaza City Despite World Concern

CAIRO: Israel’s political-security cabinet has approved a plan for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to take control of Gaza City, a move that marks a significant escalation in the nearly two-year conflict.

The decision, announced early Friday, follows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that Israel intends to seize military control of the entire Gaza Strip. Netanyahu emphasized that Israel does not plan to govern the territory long-term, instead aiming to transfer control to “friendly Arab forces” once military objectives are achieved.

“We intend to… We don’t want to govern it. We don’t want to be there as a governing body,” Netanyahu said in a Thursday interview.

Under the approved plan, the IDF will focus on occupying Gaza City while attempting to provide humanitarian aid to civilians outside active combat zones.

The move has sparked controversy both domestically and abroad. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reportedly opposed the operation, warning it could put soldiers and remaining Israeli hostages at risk, and potentially spark a prolonged insurgency. Humanitarian organizations have issued urgent appeals, warning of worsening conditions for Gaza’s civilian population.

Protests have also intensified across Israel, with demonstrators calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. International leaders have urged restraint, citing fears of further regional destabilization.

The timing and scope of the military operation remain undisclosed, but analysts expect significant developments in the coming weeks as preparations advance.
