Israel emboldened by loopholes in UN working: envoy

Munir Akram says international community should play its role in stopping air strikes on Gaza.

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram has said that there is an urgent need for availability of essential food items and healthcare services in the Gaza strip on humanitarian basis.

For this, he added, the international community should play its role and stop Israel from furthering bombardment and killing of the innocent Palestinians, including children and women.

In an interview, Ambassador Munir Akram said that the international community should rectify the imbalance in the United Nations  and in the application of international law.

He was of the opinion that Israel has been emboldened by loopholes in the working of the UN and the international order’s double and triple standards which are the root cause of its weakness.

Mr Akram said the claim made by Israel and its friends that it has the right to defend itself does not apply in this situation.

He said the problem has arisen because of Israel’s 50 years of occupation of Palestine, the murder and killing of Palestinians with impunity over these decades and, especially in recent years.

Though Israel today announced that it was ready for ‘tactical’ pauses in attacks on Gaza for the aid agencies to supply essential food items, there were still hindrances to ensure that the Gazans got the aid.

For over a month now, the Zionist state of Israel has carrying out air strikes on Gaza killing over 10,000 people, including children, women and elderly persons besides displacing thousands of others.
