Banning a political party matter of concern: US

Spokesman says US will be closely monitoring Pakistan govt's move to ban PTI.

WASHINGTON: The United States of America has said the US will be closely monitoring the Pakistan government’s decision of banning a political party.

During a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller was asked about the development in Pakistan. The spokesman said that certainly it was the beginning of a complicated political process.

He said the US always supported democracy and rule of law. He said banning a political party was a matter of serious concern. He said we support democratic norms and constitutional and political principles.

He said that as the government of Pakistan start the process, the US would be monitoring the situation.

The federal government decided to ban the PTI as a political party. The information minister said a formal decision would be taken by the federal cabinet soon.

He also said that a treason case under Article 6 of the constitution would be initiated in the Supreme Court against former president Arif Alvi, the PTI founder and former speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri.
