Jail authorities told to ensure rights of prisoners

Deputy speaker directs resolution of problems being faced by women prisoners.

PESHAWAR: Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Suriya Bibi visited the Central Jail Peshawar to ensure that prisoners were receiving their fundamental rights.

During her visit, Ms Suriya emphasized that according to the Constitution of Pakistan and Article 55 of the United Nations Human Rights, prisoners are entitled to all human rights. She said that it was the government’s responsibility to ensure that prisoners got all their rights.

The deputy speaker was briefed about the facilities provided to prisoners. She met female prisoners and listened to their problems. She instructed the jail authorities to resolve their issues on a priority basis.

The deputy speaker also inquired about the health, education, and other essential facilities for prisoners. She visited the computer lab, handicraft center, leather crafting and shoe-making sections in the jail and appreciated the quality of the products made by prisoners.

On the request of jail authorities, the deputy speaker issued instructions for the removal of garbage from the jail. She promised to talk to the health department to provide facilities for minor operations in the jail.

The authorities were also directed to organize sports and cultural events for prisoners to promote healthy activities in different jails.
