MULTAN: A sessions court in Multan has handed down a seven-year prison sentence to former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti in a long-running fake degree case.
Dasti, who secured victory from NA-175 (Muzaffargarh Rangpur) in the 2024 general elections, was declared ineligible by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in July this year over charges of misrepresentation and fraud.
The case was initiated through a petition filed by Amir Akbar, who contended that Dasti not only concealed assets but also furnished fabricated academic qualifications in his nomination papers.
While the former lawmaker had declared that he had completed the FA (intermediate) qualification, it was alleged and later established that he had not even passed matriculation.
After disqualifying Dasti, the ECP announced a by-election in the constituency, scheduling polling for September 10. However, the former parliamentarian challenged the decision before the Lahore High Court, which subsequently suspended the election schedule until further notice.
