NEW YORK: NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has appointed Chief Michael LiPetri as the interim Chief of Department, marking a pivotal leadership shift in the nation’s largest police force. LiPetri, a 31-year NYPD veteran, currently serves as Chief of Crime Control Strategies, where he spearheaded the department’s precision policing plan — a data-driven approach credited with historic reductions in violent crime across New York City.

Chief LiPetri succeeds Chief John Chell, who retires after 31 years of distinguished service. Throughout his career, LiPetri has commanded multiple precincts, including the 75th, 79th, and 101st, as well as Transit District 32 and the Office of the Chief of Department.

Commissioner Tisch Lauds LiPetri’s Leadership

Commissioner Tisch emphasized that the NYPD’s success relies on precision, accountability, and strong leadership.

“The NYPD’s success depends on data-driven policing and leaders who can deliver results,” Tisch said. “Chief LiPetri is a true crime fighter. Under his leadership, we’ve achieved record-low shootings citywide and the safest quarter ever in our subways.”

She added that LiPetri will continue leading the department’s efforts to reduce crime and strengthen public trust. Tisch also extended gratitude to outgoing Chief John Chell for his more than three decades of dedicated service to New York City.

Mayor Adams Praises Proven Crimefighter

Mayor Eric Adams echoed the commissioner’s confidence, praising LiPetri’s results-driven leadership.

“For more than 31 years, Chief Mike LiPetri has helped make our city safer and helped ‘Get Stuff Done’ for New Yorkers,” said Adams. “He designed and led the NYPD’s most successful crime-fighting strategy, achieving the lowest number of shootings in recorded history.”

Adams highlighted LiPetri’s skill in deploying resources efficiently and building strong partnerships across communities and agencies. He also commended retiring Chief Chell for guiding the NYPD through seven consecutive quarters of declining crime.

Overseeing NYPD’s Strategic Future

As interim Chief of Department, LiPetri becomes the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer. He will oversee citywide crime-fighting operations, public safety strategies, and quality-of-life initiatives. Notably, he will continue serving as Chief of Crime Control Strategies, a position he has held for six years.

LiPetri holds a master’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is a graduate of both Columbia University’s Police Management Institute and the FBI National Academy.
