RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has said that if the government did not show seriousness in meeting their demands, his party would launch a movement asking people not to pay their electricity bills.
It may do noted that the party of Mr Rahman has been staging a protest at Murree Road in Rawalpindi demanding that the government should announce relief for the common man. The protesters earlier had planned to stage their protest at D Chowk in Islamabad; however, later they moved to Rawalpindi where they have been sitting in protest for the last over 10 days.
Talking talking to media today, Mr Rahman set that their demands were related to public issues but the government was not showing any seriousness in meeting their demands. He said that enough was enough and if the government did not show seriousness in holding talks with his party to resolve the issues and give relief to the public, they would be left with no other option but to launch the movement calling upon the people not pay their bills.
He saud that all the burden of the the weak economy had been shifted to the poor people, especially the salary class who were paying the most of the taxes while the rulers were enjoying all privileges at the cost of the taxpayers.
Mr Rahman was of the view that the government should review its agreement with independent power producers who have been receiving billions of rupees every year without producing substantial amount of electricity.
He said that they have started their protest to get relief for the people who were badly affected by rising inflation and increase in taxes specially on the salary class.
Mr Rahman sir that instead of holding talks with the protesters and sorting out the issues for the betterment of the masses, the government was showing no interest and buying time in the hope that the protesters would get exhausted and leave the site of their Dharna.
However, he warned that the protesters would not go back to their homed without the government meeting their demands. He warned that their demands were the demands of the people of Pakistan and the protest would get intensified if the government failed to meet the demands.
