Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad face another day of road blockades.

RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-e-Islami brought rallies from different parts of the country to Islamabad on Friday, but the government stopped their way to D Chowk for a sit-in there.

Later, the protesters started their Dharna at Liaqatbagh in Rawalpindi. The protesters are demanding the government to provide relief to the masses hit hard by rising inflation and current inflated power bills and imposition of more taxes.

Entry and exit points of the capital were blocked and about a dozen of protesters who managed to reach D Chowk were detained by police and taken to the Secretariat police station.

Rallies also entered Islamabad and gathered at the bridge on Islamabad Highway near I-8 sector but later they were persuaded to leave and pushed to Rawalpindi. The protesters later gathered on Murree Road.

JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the protest will continue till the government accepts the demands.

He said the government should review its agreement with private power producers who are looting the consumers. He also demanded the government to decrease tax burden on salaried class.

Meanwhile, the residents of the twin cities suffered a lot due to the blockades of main roads.

Commuters, including women, were seen stranded on different roads and some of them walking to their destinations in the hot and humid weather.
