Karachi Launches Double-Decker Bus Service After Nearly Five Decades

KARACHI: Karachi has relaunched its double-decker bus service after nearly half a century, marking a significant development in the city’s public transport system.

The service was officially inaugurated on Wednesday by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who flagged off the buses by cutting the ribbon.

According to ARY News, the service has begun on a trial basis, with five double-decker buses initially operating along Shahrah-e-Faisal to Malir Cantt. Public passengers will be able to use the service starting Thursday.

Speaking to the media after the inauguration, Sharjeel Memon said the initial route has been set from Malir to Shahrah-e-Faisal. He added that if the trial proves successful, the government plans to procure a large fleet of double-decker buses, with the aim of expanding the service across Karachi by 2026.

The provincial minister announced that the fare for double-decker buses will be the same as the Peoples Bus Service, noting that the government subsidizes a portion of the ticket cost for passengers.

He further stated that major efforts are underway to improve Karachi’s road infrastructure.

“A large-scale road development project is being introduced, with over Rs 9 billion allocated for road repairs and upgrades. We expect significant improvement by March–April,” he said.
