Karachi Reels Under Impact of Rain, 10 dead

KARACHI: Heavy rainfall that started on Tuesday morning has wreaked havoc across Karachi, causing severe urban flooding and submerging low-lying areas.

At least 10 people have died in various accidents, including electrocution and collapsing walls.

Major roads, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, University Road, and I.I. Chundrigar Road, were submerged, leading to massive traffic jams. Stranded commuters were forced to push vehicles and wade through water, while cars and buses were swept away.

Residential areas such as Surjani Town, Garden, Shadman Town, and Sakhi Hassan experienced water intrusion, while several shops on North Karachi’s Nagan Chowrangi Food Street were flooded.

Electricity supply has been disrupted in many areas, and mobile and internet services have also been affected. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed (170 mm), followed by the Old Airport (158 mm), Jinnah Terminal (153 mm), and Nazimabad (150 mm).

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired an emergency meeting and announced a public holiday in Karachi to minimize hardship. Authorities stated that major roads have been partially cleared, and further rainfall is expected today and tomorrow.

The Met Office predicts that rainfall on Wednesday could exceed Tuesday’s levels, and authorities are monitoring flood-affected areas closely.
