SRINAGAR: The humiliating defeat of Narendra Modi’s BJP in the recent election of Kargil Hill Development Council election was a referendum against New Delhi’s decision to abolish the special status of occupied Kashmir four years back.
In August 2019, the Narendra Modi regime abolished Article 370 and 35-A that gave special status to the disputed territory and divided occupied Kashmir into two administrative areas.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement the National Conference party in Srinagar stated that in the aftermath of the Kargil Hill elections, it was likely that the Modi regime would delay the legislative assembly elections in occupied Kashmir to avoid further humiliation.
It may be mentioned here that in the Kargil Hill Development Council elections, the opposition grabbed 22 out of the 26 seats while the BJP could win only two seats and two seats went to the independent candidates.
The National Conference in its statement said these local government elections were a referendum against the Modi regime in which people rejected the abolition of the special status of occupied Kashmir in 2019.
Kashmiri leader Mehbooba Mufti while commenting on the humiliation of the BJP in the local elections had earlier said that the people of Kashmir had rejected the Hindutva ideology of the BJP led by Modi.
The results of the elections showed the hatred the Modi-led government has created among citizens belonging to different faiths especially Muslins, Sikhs abd Christians in whole India.
