LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared that relations between Pakistan and India cannot move towards normalisation unless the decades-old Kashmir dispute is resolved in line with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Addressing a gathering organised by the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation in London, the Prime Minister reminded the audience that the two nuclear-armed neighbours have fought four wars since independence, consuming billions of dollars in resources that could otherwise have been channelled into public welfare, poverty reduction and long-term prosperity.

“Pakistan and India are bound by geography as neighbours, and we must find a way to coexist peacefully. But our desire for dialogue rests on equality, fairness and mutual respect. Without a just settlement of the Kashmir issue, true and lasting relations simply cannot be established,” he stated firmly.

Sharif paid rich tribute to the resilience and sacrifices of the Kashmiri people, insisting their blood would never go in vain. He also expressed deep appreciation for overseas Pakistanis, acknowledging their vital role in strengthening the country’s economy, and lightened the tone of his address by sharing poetry that drew warm applause from the audience.

The Prime Minister further emphasised that sustainable peace in South Asia hinges on justice for Kashmiris, warning that continued conflict will undermine regional stability, economic integration and growth at a time when cooperation is critically needed.

He argued that the vast potential of South Asia’s youth and markets remains hostage to political disputes, making resolution of Kashmir more urgent than ever.

Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to travel from London to the United States later today to participate in the United Nations General Assembly session. During his visit, he will deliver Pakistan’s address to the global forum and join a special debate on Gaza.

The Premier is expected to highlight Pakistan’s position on Kashmir, the humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, and recent security concerns, including attacks in Qatar, while also engaging with international leaders on trade, investment and diplomatic cooperation.
