SRINAGAR: Kashmiris in both the occupied territory and Azad Kashmir as well as around the world will observe Right to Self-determination Day on January 5.
The day is being observed as an attempt to awaken the international community to realize the cruelties and injustices with the people of Kashmir that have been denied their right to self-determination for over seven decades.
A spokesman for All Parties Hurriyat Conference said it was on 5th January in 1949 when the UN Security Council passed a historic resolution pledging that the question of accession of the State of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan will be decided through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite.
He said that the UN resolution of 5 January provides the basis for the settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
However, successive Indian governments gave trampled the UN resolution and kept the Kashmiris deprived of their right and subjected them to cruelties to keep by them silent.
The Modi regime in New Delhi has broken all records and went ahead to eliminate the Kashmiris as a nation. It even withdrew the special status granted to Kashmir due to its disputed nature by under article 370 of Indian constitution.
Moreover, outsiders have been allowed to settle in the area in order to turn the Kashmiris into a minority on their own land.
Moreover, occupying forces have been carrying out killings and abduction of people in Kashmir without any check and the world remains a silent spectator.
