PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakthunkhwa assembly has passed a resolution condemning recent military courts verdicts against civilians.

The assembly passed a resolution against the sentencing of scores of PTI supporters to different jail terms for their involvement in attacking military installations in May 2023 against the arrest of party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

The resolution presented in the house by PTI MPA Abdus Salam stated that a judicial system is working in the country and fair judicial trial in courts was the fundamental right of the citizens. However, civilians have been sentenced to imprisonment after their trial in military courts. These courts lacked transparency in disposing justice.

The resolution said that this house demands that the federal government should set aside the sentences handed down by the military courts against civilians.

The resolution also demanded that all the incidents of May 9, 2023 should be investigated by forming a judicial commission.

According to media reports, the resolution had a fake signature of PML-N MPA Jalal Khan.

It may be mentioned here that military courts recently sentenced over 70 PTI workers to different jail terms ranging from two to 10 years for attacking military installations.

The European Union, the British government as well as as the United States of America in their separate statements criticized the rulings and termed it against Pakistan’s obligations and commitments to international laws.
