LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) here on Friday announced its verdict in the May 9 attack case related to an assault on the GOR Gate at Club Chowk.
The decision was pronounced by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill inside Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The court acquitted PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the case. However, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Ijaz Chaudhry and Umar Sarfaraz Cheema were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.
In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Rs 500,000 on each convict. In case of non-payment of the fine, the convicts will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment. The court also ordered the confiscation of properties of the convicted individuals.
According to the prosecution, the accused were involved in attacking security installations, vandalizing CCTV cameras, and inciting workers to rebellion and violence during the May 9 unrest. A total of 56 prosecution witnesses were presented during the trial.
The case was registered by Race Course Police Station, which submitted challans against 25 accused persons. Four suspects — Habib Ahmed, Farooq Anjum, Arsalan, and Akbar Khan — were declared absconders during the trial.
The prosecution further alleged that PTI leaders planned and instigated acts of violence and unrest as part of a broader conspiracy linked to the events of May 9.
