Nepal: landslide throws two buses into river, 63 feared dead

Buses were carrying 66 people, three jump out, incident occured during heavy rain.

KATHMANDU: A landslide threw two passenger buses into a river in the central district of Chitwan in Nepal on Friday, killing at least 63 people.

The buses were carrying 66 people but three of them saved themselves by jumping out of the vehicles. The incident occurred during heavy monsoon rain, authorities said.

The accident took place along the Narayanghat-Mugling highway, around 100 kilometres west of the capital Kathmandu early Friday at 3:30am local time, according to a foreign news agency.

One of the two buses hit by the landslide was going from Kathmandu to Gaur in Rautahat district in southern Nepal and the other was coming to Kathmandu from southern Birgunj, according to the report.
