ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association in separate statements on Tuesday expressed reservations on the neutrality of Chief Election Commissioner Sikendar Sultan Raja.
In their separate statements, they demanded that in order to ensure free and fair elections on February 8, the CEC should be removed from his post.
The Bar Council said that Raja carved out two National Assembly seats in his hometown of Jhelum that had 1.3 million voters. On the other hand, there is just one NA seat in the city of Hafizabad that has also 1.3 million voters.
Similar discrepancies were noted in the constituncies in Rawalpindi and Gujranwala, the Council added.
It said that the chief election commissioner seems biased and fair and transparent elections are not possible with Raja heading the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Bar Association said that the CEC should be sent home in order to hold the general elections in a free and fair manner.
It said the elections should be held on February 8 and the country cannot afford further delay in it. But in order to make them transparent, the current CEC should be removed.
