SRINAGAR: Congress has won most of the seats in the local government elections recently held in the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to results released by the election commission in the occupied territory, Congress and its allies have grabbed 49 of the seats. The local government elections were held in three phases in the occupied territory.
The BJP party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi clinched 29 seats. People’s Democratic Party of former chief minister Mahbooba Mufti could win three seats while nine seats went to independent and other parties.
According to reports, in the house of 90 seats the Congress and its allied parties need 46 seats and they have already won 49 and are in a comfortable position to form a local government.
The third and final phase of the LG polls in Kashmir was held in occupied Kashmir on Oct 1.
The occupation regime claimed that the turnout in the first and second phase of the local government elections remained over 55%.
Political observers said that due to the fear of law and order situation and deployment of hundreds of thousands of military and paramilitary troops, the people of occupied Kashmir did not take any interest in the elections.
Over half a million Indian troops are already deployed in the occupied territory who keep a visual eye on the residents and routinely carry out search and pumping operations.
The local government elections were held in occupied Kashmir for the first time after Indian government abolished the special status of the disputed territory in August 2019.
The first phase of the local government elections was held on Sept 18.
