LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition filed against the outsourcing of government schools in the province.

The petition was filed by Aitzaz Ahsan and others. In the petition, they contended that the Punjab government was outsourcing public school to NGOs after which education would be unavailable for poor children as the private sector would increase the fees.

They said that free basic education was the birthright of evey child but by handing over the schools to the private sector the government was depriving children of marginalized class of their right to education.

The petition urged the high court to restrain the government from outsourcing the schools to the private sector.

However, the government counsel argued that the apprehensions expressed in the petition were not true. He said only closed schools were being outsourced and even after their handing over to the private sector these schools would remain under the control of the education department of Punjab.

After hearing arguments of both sides, the court dismissed the petitions.
