She also praised his sustainability leadership, noting the University’s target of becoming net zero carbon by 2030.

A Career Rooted in Global Leadership

Lord Sarfraz, a member of the House of Lords since 2019, brings wide-ranging experience in technology, sustainability, and international relations.

He served as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Singapore from 2022 to 2024, and currently sits on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy.

In addition, he is the founder of the Lord Sarfraz Foundation, a philanthropic organization focused on education and equal opportunity.

Inspiration for the Next Generation

In his official statement, Lord Sarfraz expressed deep pride in the appointment, stating he is honored to follow in the footsteps of Shabir Randeree CBE, the outgoing Chancellor.

He emphasized UEL’s tradition of serving diverse communities and preparing students to be future-ready. “I look forward to supporting the next generation of leaders and innovators,” he added.

His appointment comes as UEL continues to deliver on its Careers Guarantee, expand practice-based research, and increase its social impact across East London and beyond.
