CÓRDOBA (SPAIN): A massive fire broke out at Spain’s historic Córdoba Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 8th century, authorities said Saturday. The exact origin of the blaze remains unknown.
Officials reported that the fire started in a small chapel located inside the mosque’s main hall. Flames quickly spread upward, reaching the ornate wooden ceilings.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Cooling operations are underway to prevent re-ignition.
The Córdoba Mosque, also known as the Mezquita, is one of the most iconic monuments of Islamic architecture in Europe and draws millions of visitors annually. The structure’s combination of Moorish and Renaissance elements has made it a symbol of Spain’s rich cultural heritage.
No injuries were immediately reported, and authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of the damage.
