ISLAMABAD: PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman has termed the May 9 incidents a “dark chapter” in Pakistan’s history, saying they were a direct attack on the country’s integrity and national unity.
In a statement, she said that unlike past political tragedies, the events of May 9 involved unprecedented attacks on military installations, memorials of martyrs, and key state institutions, which she described as an assault on Pakistan itself.
Drawing comparisons with past events, Ms Rehman said that despite the emotional reactions following the executions of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, protesters did not target defense installations or symbols of national pride.
She noted that while incidents of unrest and violence did occur in the past, the slogan “Pakistan Khappay” reflected national unity, and key state institutions were not attacked.
Rehman said those responsible for the May 9 incidents, including planners and facilitators, have been dealt with according to the law and Constitution, setting an example for accountability.
She further stated that for the first time in Pakistan’s political history, national defense sites were targeted in the name of political protest, warning that elements inciting youth against state institutions cannot be considered well-wishers of the country.
Reaffirming support for the armed forces, she said the nation stands firmly with its military, martyrs, and national institutions, and will defeat any attempts to undermine them.
She also highlighted the role of the armed forces during recent national security challenges, saying their professionalism and sacrifices have strengthened Pakistan’s global standing and reinforced national stability.
