CENTRAL MEXICO: At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured in a shooting at a football ground in central Mexico, authorities reported.
The attack occurred immediately after a local football match in Loma de Flores, a neighborhood in Salamanca, a city in the violence-prone state of Guanajuato. According to municipal and state officials, armed assailants opened fire on the crowd that had gathered at the field after the game ended.
Salamanca Mayor César Prieto stated that a gang entered the field and indiscriminately shot at people, killing 10 on the spot, with another succumbing to injuries later in hospital.
The mayor described the situation as a severe surge in criminal violence, noting that organized crime groups are attempting to weaken state authority. He directly appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum and state authorities for additional security support.
“We are going through a very serious stage, facing a social crisis. Criminal groups are trying to undermine state control, but they will not succeed,” Prieto said. The Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office has launched a formal investigation into the attack, coordinating with federal authorities to reinforce security. State and federal forces have been deployed to restore law and order.
Guanajuato was Mexico’s deadliest state last year, and the region has increasingly become a hub for organized crime. Clashes between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel over territory and illegal markets have led to multiple mass shootings, hundreds of murders, enforced disappearances, and the discovery of clandestine mass graves.
