JERUSALEM/TEHRAN: In a significant escalation, Israel launched targeted airstrikes on Iranian military facilities early Saturday, responding to recent attacks from Tehran. Tensions in the region have been running high since Iran’s October 1st missile assault, during which around 200 ballistic missiles were fired at Israel, marking Iran’s second direct attack on the country in six months.
According to Reuters the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated they were conducting precise strikes to neutralize Iranian military targets as part of a defense strategy. “Our defensive and offensive capabilities are fully mobilized,” the IDF confirmed, emphasizing Israel’s stance on protecting its security against threats from Tehran and its affiliates.
As explosions echoed across Tehran and surrounding areas like Karaj, Iranian state TV suggested the sounds could be linked to the activation of the country’s air defense systems, while downplaying the presence of rockets or aircraft over Tehran. Iranian officials have repeatedly cautioned that any aggression toward Iran will be met with severe retaliation.
The United States, notified of the strikes in advance, confirmed Israel’s right to self-defense following Iran’s missile attacks. Washington is working to prevent further escalation, with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for restraint.
This comes amid Israel’s intensified campaigns against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both groups backed by Iran. The Israeli Defense Minister warned that attempts to harm Israel would lead to “a heavy price,” reinforcing Israel’s stance in the wake of escalating conflicts in the region. – Monitoring Desk
