TRIPOLI: A migrant boat capsized off the eastern coast of Libya near the city of Tobruk, resulting in the deaths of 18 migrants and leaving 50 others missing. Ten survivors were rescued, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Tobruk, located near the Egyptian border, has become a key departure point for migrants attempting the dangerous sea crossing to Europe.
The Mediterranean route from Libya to Europe is one of the deadliest migration paths in the world. Many migrants embark on overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels, facing risks of drowning, dehydration, and exploitation by human traffickers.
International organizations have repeatedly called for increased rescue operations and better protection for migrants, urging governments to address the root causes of migration including conflict, poverty, and political instability in the region.
According to international media reports, Libya has increasingly become a major hub for migrants undertaking risky journeys across the Mediterranean.
This tragic incident adds to a series of similar disasters in the region. Last month, two separate boat accidents claimed the lives of over 60 migrants trying to reach Europe.
