Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Mauritania; 49 Dead, 100 Missing

NOUAKCHOTT: A tragic incident occurred near the coast of Mauritania where a boat carrying migrants capsized, resulting in the deaths of at least 49 people, while over 100 remain missing.

According to international media reports, the vessel was carrying around 160 people when it overturned. Only 17 individuals have been rescued so far.

The ill-fated boat had reportedly departed from Gambia about a week ago. Among the passengers were nationals from Senegal, Gambia, and other African countries.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the intended destination of the boat, but such vessels are often en route to Europe, attempting to cross the Atlantic through dangerous migratory routes.

This tragedy highlights the continued risks faced by migrants seeking better opportunities, often falling victim to unsafe and overcrowded sea voyages. Rescue operations are ongoing, with hopes of finding more survivors.
