ISLAMABAD: Military courts have already started trial of over 100 civilian people arrested in connection with the May 9 arson attacks on military installations in Punjab and Khyber Pakthunkhwa provinces.
Supporters and workers of the PTI took to the streets under a plan soon after the National Accountability Bureau took PTI chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan into custody in connection with a corruption 6on May 9. He was released by the Supreme Court of Pakistan three days later.
During the violence, the protesters attacked the GHQ Rawalpindi, corps commander house in Lahore along with other installations in Peshawar and other cities.
The police and army later arrested iver 200 people and 102 of them have been charged with vandalism.
The federal government has now submitted a report to the Supreme Court that military trial of the 102 persons was underway.
“To safeguard the right to justice to the arrested persons, it is imperative that their trials are conducted and concluded so that those who may merit acquittal can be acquitted, and those who may merit minor sentences and have already served the time in custody can also be released,” the government report stated.
The PTI and lawyers have filed petitions in the apex court seeking an order to stop the military trial of civilians. The court is expected to start hearing of the petitioners on October 23.
The accused have been taken into custody under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952, read with the Official Secrets Act, 1923, it added.
