Missing jail official in custody for ‘corruption’: ACE

Deputy superintendent of Adiala jail went missing on August 14, his family says.

RAWALPINDI: An official of the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi who went missing two months ago is now under the custody of Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE).

Officials in the police and the corruption watchdog told media that Muhammad Akram, the former deputy superintendent of Adiala jail, was being interrogated in a corruption case. He has been accused of taking a bribe of Rs95,000 from a citizen.

Although Mr Akram went missing on August 14, the government later dismissed him from service on the charge of negligence which had led to the death of a prisoner in the jail a couple of months back.

Sources say that Muhammad Akram was picked up from his residence in the Jail Colony in Rawalpindi on the night of August 14 and taken away to an undisclosed location by law  enforcement agencies.

He was involved in facilitating PTI founder Imran Khan in the jail. Sources said that Akram was working as a messenger between Imran Khan and his party leaders and others outside the jail.

Earlier, the wife of the missing jail official approached the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench, seeking recovery of her husband. On the direction of the court, a senior police officer appeared before the judge and informed him that the police were trying to trace out Mr Akram.

He had stated that the jail official was not in the custody of the police. However now it has been officially stated by the Punjab government that the missing jail official was in the custody of the anti corruption establishment in Sheikhupura city and a local court has given the accused in the custody of the ACE official for three days.
