PESHAWAR: In the Senate elections held in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) secured six out of 11 seats, while opposition parties won the remaining five.
The PTI senators-elect included Murad Saaed who has been in the hiding since the arrest of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan about two years ago.
All 145 members of the provincial assembly participated in the voting process.
On the general seats, PTI emerged victorious on four out of seven seats. Murad Saeed received 26 votes, Faisal Javed secured 22, while both Mirza Afridi and Noorul Haq Qadri garnered 21 votes each. The remaining three general seats were won by the opposition, with Niaz Ahmed from PML-N, Talha Mahmood from PPP, and Atta ul Haq from JUI-F claiming victory.
For the two women’s reserved seats, PTI’s Rubina Naz won with 89 votes, while the other seat was secured by Rubina Khalid of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
On the technocrat seats, PTI’s Azam Swati and JUI-F’s Dilawar Khan were declared successful.
PTI’s dissident candidate Khurram Zeeshan failed to secure any votes. It is worth noting that the elections followed a pre-agreed seat-sharing formula between PTI and the opposition, based on a 6-5 ratio, which was reflected in the final results. Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced within PTI over changes made to the list of candidates without party chairman Imran Khan’s knowledge.
