NA Passes Anti-Terrorism Amendment Bill Amid Opposition Protests

JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticizes legislation, saying it effectively turns every Pakistani citizen into a “born criminal. "

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly, under the chairmanship of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, has passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2024 by a majority vote.

The opposition strongly opposed the bill and staged protests during the session.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticized the legislation, saying it effectively turns every Pakistani citizen into a “born criminal,” as anyone can be detained by authorities and must then prove their innocence. He added that such flawed laws should not be set as a precedent.

The JUI-F leader further argued that terrorism is not limited to Pakistan and highlighted that past experiences with similar laws have raised serious concerns.

Government supporters, however, defended the bill, stating that the amendments are necessary to strengthen the legal framework against terrorism and ensure swift action against suspects.

They emphasized that the legislation aims to improve national security and protect citizens from extremist threats.
