NA passes bill to amend Islamabad’s LG law as polls set for Oct 9th

Opposition PTI says govt tries to run away from elections as its defeat imminent.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has gotten a law passed through the National Assembly to amend the Islamabad Local Government Act 2015.

However, the opposition PTI said that the government was trying to run away from the polls by introducing an amendment to the law as the PTI would clean sweep the polls.

The local government elections in Islamabad are scheduled to be held on October 9 this year. The election commission of Pakistan has already announced the schedule for the polls. The tenure of the last and first local government ended many years ago and since then successive governments failed to hold the polls

On Monday, the government  introduced a law to amend the Islamabad local government act and the bill was hurriedly passed by the house without following  rules and regulations in this regard.

According to the bill, the government wants to increase the number of general seats of union council and women members. After passage from the houses, the bill will go to the Senate and then to the president of Pakistan to become a law. In that case, there would be a need to carry out fresh delimitations of constituencies  in whole Islamabad.

PTI chairman Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan criticized the government for introducing a bill at a time when the election commission had announced the schedule to hold the elections. He said that the the government wants to run away from the polls as its defeat was imminent.
