ISLAMABAD: Pakistani mountaineer Naila Kiani has reached a remarkable new milestone by successfully summiting Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.

Kiani began her final push from Camp Four on Thursday evening, reaching the 8,586-meter summit early Friday morning around 6 am, where she proudly raised the Pakistani flag.

Located on the border of India and Nepal, Kanchenjunga is the tallest mountain in India and one of the most challenging climbs in the world.

Following the successful ascent, Kiani said, “Climbing Kanchenjunga is more than a personal goal — it’s a message to all Pakistani women that they are stronger than they think.”

With this climb, Naila has now conquered 12 of the 14 peaks in the world that stand above 8,000 meters, making her the first Pakistani woman to achieve this. She now sets her sights on the remaining two: Shishapangma and Dhaulagiri.

Naila’s climbing career began in 2021 with the ascent of Gasherbrum II. In 2022, she summited K2 and Gasherbrum I, followed by Annapurna in April 2023.

That same year, she also reached the summits of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak, and Cho Oyu. In May 2024, she climbed Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain.

Now, with only two peaks left, Kiani stands on the verge of becoming the first Pakistani woman to scale all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter mountains, a truly historic accomplishment.
