ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Thursday approved amendments to the Pakistan Army Act 1952, the Pakistan Air Force Act 1953 and the Pakistan Navy Ordinance 1961.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif introduced the bills which were passed with overwhelming support. Additionally, the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill was also introduced and approved.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar explained that these amendments align with the 27th Amendment and update the military and judicial frameworks. He clarified that the Chief of Defence would now serve a five-year term from the date of appointment. Changes were also made within the Air Force and Navy. Moreover, the Chief of Army Staff will now also hold the title of Chief of Defence Forces.

The Domestic Violence Protection and Prevention Bill, presented by Sharmila Farooqi, was passed despite opposition from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) members. Naeema Kishore called for more time to review the bill, suggesting amendments before approval.

Aliya Kamran criticized the rush to pass the bill, pointing out that rules had been suspended for its expedited approval. JUI members, including Shahida Akhtar Ali, argued the bill conflicted with Islamic principles, citing Article 227 of the Constitution. “This bill goes against our Islamic identity,” she said.
