Nawaz moves IHC for restoration of appeals against Al-Azizia and Avenfield verdicts

Appeals had been dismissed after former prime minister did not appear in court.

ISLAMABAD: A petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court seeking the restoration of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s appeals against judgements in the Al-Azizia and Avenfield corruption cases against him.

Amjad Pervez Advocate in the petition pleaded to the court to restore the appeals of the former prime minister and issue judgements after perusing them.

The court had earlier accepted the requests of the former prime minister to suspend arrest warrants and grant bail in three cases against Mr Sharif on the plea that he was returning home and surrendering before the court to contest the cases.

In the Al-Azizia and Avenfield cases, Mr Sharif had been convicted and disqualified from holding public office for 10 years.

Upon his return from four years’ self-exile on October 21, Mr Sharif had signed the petitions seeking restoration of the appeals.

Earlier, the Islamabad High Court had dismissed Mr Sharif’s appeals in the two cases after he did not appear before the court following his departure from the country in November 2019.

The court has already stopped arrest of the former prime minister in any case till October 24.
