ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Committee on Power is likely to approve a summary of the Power Division to stop providing free electricity units to officers of power companies and make payments to them instead.
Sources said that stopping provision of free units to the officers from grade 17 to 21 will result in a saving of over Rs6 billion per year.
According to the sources, grade 17 officers were getting 450 units per month free electricity, grade 28 officers 600 units, grade 19 officers 880 units, grade 20 officers 1100 free units and grade 21 officers got 1300 units free of cost every month.
Now 15,858 rupees will be paid to grade 17 officers, Rs21,996 to grade 18 officers, and Rs37,594 to grade 19 officers. Similarly, grade 20 and grade 21 officers will be paid Rs46,992 and Rs55,536 per month in place of the free electricity units.
The sources said free availability of electricity units to officials up to grade 16 will continue till a change is made to it in the second phase.
The move is aimed to rationalize supply of electricity and plug misuse in the wake of unprecedented hikes in power tariffs as a precondition set by the IMF.
