‎No short cut to citizenship: US cracks down on birth tourism

WASHINGTON: ‎The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has launched a crackdown against “birth tourism.”

‎A statement issued on social media said that U.S. consular officers were working to prevent foreign tourists from abusing the U.S. immigration system.

‎According to the statement, if a visa applicant’s sole is to give birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for their child, their visa will be denied.

‎The Department of State clarified that it is unacceptable for foreign parents to use a U.S. tourist visa to secure citizenship for their child, as this could result in American taxpayers bearing medical expenses.

‎This practice, known as “birth tourism,” will result in the denial of such visa applications under U.S. immigration laws.

‎The statement warned that individuals who misuse the immigration system through birth tourism may be ineligible for future visas or travel to the United States.

‎According to the Department of State, these measures are being taken to protect American taxpayers and local communities.
