WASHINGTON: The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has launched a crackdown against “birth tourism.”
A statement issued on social media said that U.S. consular officers were working to prevent foreign tourists from abusing the U.S. immigration system.
According to the statement, if a visa applicant’s sole is to give birth in the United States to obtain citizenship for their child, their visa will be denied.
The Department of State clarified that it is unacceptable for foreign parents to use a U.S. tourist visa to secure citizenship for their child, as this could result in American taxpayers bearing medical expenses.
This practice, known as “birth tourism,” will result in the denial of such visa applications under U.S. immigration laws.
The statement warned that individuals who misuse the immigration system through birth tourism may be ineligible for future visas or travel to the United States.
According to the Department of State, these measures are being taken to protect American taxpayers and local communities.
