NEW YORK: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in South Asia. It emphasized the importance of upholding the sanctity of international agreements, including the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Indus Waters Treaty.
A high-level parliamentary delegation from Pakistan briefed OIC ambassadors at the United Nations on the current situation following recent tensions and military escalation between Pakistan and India.
During a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, Pakistan’s former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addressed the permanent representatives of OIC member states. He strongly rejected India’s attempts to link the Pahalgam incident to Pakistan without any investigation or evidence.
Bilawal Bhutto asserted that this hasty allegation by India was used as a pretext for carrying out illegal military actions, targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Expressing serious concern over India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Bilawal warned that India was attempting to weaponize water against Pakistan. He stressed that such behavior must not be allowed to become a norm.
He thanked OIC member states for their efforts in de-escalation, mediation, and ceasefire initiatives, reiterating that dialogue, inclusion, and diplomacy are the only viable paths to peace.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to peace, restraint, and diplomacy, he called for the restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty, full respect for the ceasefire, and the resumption of comprehensive dialogue with India.
Bilawal also expressed gratitude to OIC countries for their continued support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that a just and lasting solution to the Kashmir dispute is essential for sustainable peace in South Asia.
He urged OIC member states to continue their principled support for the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people, particularly their right to self-determination in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
In response, OIC countries welcomed Pakistan’s timely and transparent briefing, reaffirmed their solidarity with the people of Kashmir, and supported Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution of all disputes, especially Jammu and Kashmir, in accordance with UN resolutions.
