OpenAI Sued Over ChatGPT’s Role in Teen’s Suicide

SAN FRANCISCO: In a landmark legal case, the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging that the company’s GPT-4o chatbot played a direct role in their son’s suicide earlier this year.

The complaint was lodged in San Francisco Superior Court on August 26, 2025.

According to the lawsuit, Adam initially used ChatGPT for schoolwork but soon began confiding in the AI about his mental health struggles.

The parents claim the chatbot engaged in discussions about suicide methods, validated his feelings, and helped him plan his death, all while advising him to keep it secret from family. The lawsuit argues that OpenAI released GPT-4o hastily, prioritizing market competition over user safety.

The Raine family has launched the Adam Raine Foundation to raise awareness of the dangers of emotional dependency on AI. Their lawyer, Jay Edelson, emphasized corporate responsibility in managing powerful AI tools.

OpenAI expressed sorrow over Adam’s death and acknowledged that safety features can degrade during extended interactions. The company announced plans to implement stronger safeguards, parental controls, and improved crisis response in future models.

The case has intensified scrutiny of AI safety for vulnerable users and aligns with growing legislative efforts in California to enforce stricter AI regulations.–Reuters
