Over 100 Injured in Bangladesh in Clash Over Football Match
DHAKA: A football match announcement on loudspeakers sparked violent clashes among residents of four villages in the Bhanga area of Faridpur, leaving more than 100 people injured.
According to police and local sources, the violence began Friday evening near Monserabad Bazaar and continued for approximately two and a half hours.
Authorities and local residents managed to restore order by nightfall, but clashes resumed around 7 a.m. on Saturday. Those injured include police officers, journalists, and villagers.
Eyewitnesses reported that residents from Monserabad and neighboring villages Khapura, Singardak, and Mujhi Kenda gathered near the Monserabad bus stand on the Dhaka-Khulna highway and the Hamardi Union Council office. Both sides were armed with sticks and shields, with reports of stone-throwing, property damage, and looting.
Local sources indicated that the dispute began two days earlier when youth from Monserabad were allegedly attacked by residents of a neighboring village during a football match announcement.
Alamin Mian, the investigating officer at Bhanga Police Station, stated that law enforcement agencies are on the scene attempting to control the situation, and additional forces have been requested from the district administration.
