WASHINGTON: More than 100 international law experts based in the United States have signed an open letter condemning the recent U.S. and Israeli military attacks on Iran, calling them potentially equivalent to war crimes.
The letter expressed serious concerns over the conduct of U.S. forces and statements by senior U.S. officials, citing violations of human rights law and international humanitarian law.
Experts warned that the attacks, which began on February 28, were carried out without authorization from the United Nations Security Council and without credible evidence of any Iranian threat.
The letter stressed that the use of force against another state is only lawful in self-defense or with explicit approval from the Security Council. In this case, the Security Council neither authorized the attacks, nor had Iran attacked the U.S. or Israel.
The experts’ statement highlighted the potential legal ramifications of these actions and calls for the international community to address violations of international law.
