Over 200 Killed in Coltan Mine Collapse in Congo

RUBAYA: More than 200 people have been killed after a coltan mine collapsed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to international media reports.

The incident occurred in the Rubaya area, a region known for mineral extraction and reportedly under the influence of armed groups. Authorities said the exact death toll could not be confirmed by Friday due to ongoing rescue efforts and difficult access to the site.

Reports indicate that the collapse was triggered by a landslide caused by heavy seasonal rains, which softened the ground and led to the mine caving in. Women and children were among the victims, while at least 20 people were seriously injured and are receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.

Local officials stated that many of the victims were artisanal miners working inside the mine at the time of the collapse.

Rubaya is a major global source of coltan, a mineral used to produce tantalum, which is essential for manufacturing mobile phones, computers, aerospace equipment, and turbines. The area is estimated to produce around 15 percent of the world’s coltan supply.

Mining accidents are common in the region due to poor safety standards, illegal mining practices, and ongoing instability. Authorities have called for improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
