NEW YORK: India has arrested over 2,000 Kashmiris in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam incident, drawing sharp criticism from Pakistan, which accuses New Delhi of escalating human rights violations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at a United Nations Security Council briefing, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said India is using the incident as a pretext to intensify repression and crush the Kashmiri people’s legitimate struggle for self-determination.
Ambassador Asim highlighted alarming findings from recent years, including the discovery of thousands of unidentified and unmarked graves in the region. He alleged that Indian forces abduct civilians, subject them to torture, and carry out extrajudicial killings without legal accountability.
“These are not isolated incidents but part of a systematic campaign to silence Kashmiris and erase their identity,” the ambassador said.
He stressed the urgent need for the international community to address the crisis of enforced disappearances, prevent further escalation, and work toward a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Pakistan urged the UN to uphold its moral and legal responsibility by ensuring justice for the victims and accountability for the perpetrators of rights abuses in the region.
