ISLAMABAD: Over 23,000 Pakistanis are currently jailed in different countries of the world, majority of them in the Middle East, the Senate was informed during a session in Tuesday.
According to a written reply to a question raised by a senator, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that 23,456 Pakistanis are in jails in different countries, most of whom are in the Gulf countries.
There are 12,156 Pakistani prisoners in Saudi Arabia, 5,292 in the UAE, 811 in Greece and 338 in Qatar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also presented the details of Pakistanis released from Saudi jails after the visit of the Saudi Crown Prince to Pakistan.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 7,208 Pakistani prisoners were released from Saudi jails in the last six years from 2019 to 2024.
As many as 545 Pakistani prisoners were released from Saudi jails in 2019, 892 in 2020, 916 in 2021, 1331 in 2022, 1394 in 2023 and 2130 in 2024 last year.
The Foreign Ministry says it is difficult to determine the distribution and number of those pardoned due to the constant influx of prisoners and deportations.
