Lahore Electric Supply Company in top with more than three billion rupees recovery, says official.

ISLAMABAD: A senior officer of the Energy Division has claimed that the government in its ongoing crackdown on electricity thefts and defaulters has so far recovered over Rs14 billion and arrested about 10,000 people.

The arrested people were involved in stealing electricity through illegal connections or meter tampering, said Secretary power Arshad Langrial. Moreover, 23,000 cases were registered against power pilferers in different police stations across the country, the secretary added.

According to a list, Lahore Electric Supply Company was on top with iver three billion rupees recovery during the drive.

The government launched the campaign to plug the gaps that led to losses worth billions of rupees putting an extra burden on the exchequer already hit hard by inflation.

The government had no other option but to pass on the losses to the consumers by jacking up power bills.

This led to public outcry in August when consumers received bills amounting to thousands of rupees mire than they used to pay.

Despite promises, however, the government failed to provide any relief to the masses.

The public protests still continue in Azad Kashmir where the consumers have burnt down the bills or throw them into rivers.
