WASHINGTON: The chairman of the Pakistan Caucus in US Congress Congressman Tom Suozzi and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Rizwan Saeed Sheikh at a joint press conference here highlighted the significance of the recent historic symposium held on Pakistan–U.S. relations.
During the conference, discussions focused on eight decades of Pakistan–U.S. partnership, Pakistan’s economic journey, its promising future, and avenues for cooperation between the two countries, said Tom Suozzi.
Terrorism remains the biggest challenge in the region, stated the Congressman.
Pakistan is bearing the burden of combating terrorism largely on its own, and this must be recognized, Suozzi added.
He expressed a desire for stronger Pakistan–U.S. relations and increased American investment in Pakistan.
Pakistan has consistently played a frontline role in the global war on terrorism and is among the most affected countries, said Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh.
He noted that the Pakistani people are still fighting the war against terrorism.
Terrorism originating from Afghanistan has cost Pakistani lives, the Ambassador added.
He emphasized that Pakistan–U.S. partnership has always been important and mutually beneficial.
Pakistan emerged as an “Asian Tiger,” but various regional challenges have affected its economic growth and potential, said the Ambassador.
Congressman Suozzi noted that terrorist activities in Balochistan have hindered development in the region.
He also stated that Pakistan–U.S. bilateral relations have significantly improved over the past year and this positive momentum should continue.
Economic investment is the best way to improve security, Suozzi added. Due to its strategic geographic location, Pakistan can play an effective role internationally.
Regarding the recent U.S.–Iran tensions, Suozzi said Pakistan is playing an important role as a friend to both sides.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan has clearly articulated the country’s stance on resolving the conflict peacefully, said the Ambassador.
He added that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for global peace are not new but part of a long historical tradition. Pakistan previously played a key role in facilitating diplomatic ties between the U.S. and China.
Given its longstanding relations with the U.S., Iran, and Gulf states, Pakistan is well-positioned to help resolve the current conflict, the Ambassador said. He expressed gratitude for the trust shown in Pakistan by all parties.
Pakistan will continue its facilitation efforts in consultation with friendly countries, although the ultimate responsibility lies with the concerned parties.
The ambassador expressed hope for positive outcomes from Pakistan’s ongoing efforts.
During the press conference, a question was raised about difficulties faced by Pakistanis in obtaining U.S. visas.
Congressman Suozzi said he would work with Republican members to address these issues. He also said he would consider writing to the administration with bipartisan support on the matter.
On Pakistan’s importance in U.S. foreign policy, Suozzi stated that Pakistan holds strategic significance due to its geographic location.
Regarding Pakistan–India relations, Suozzi said that communities from both countries live in his constituency, and he will continue efforts to improve ties between them.
Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh also commented on Pakistan–India relations. He stated that Pakistan seeks dignified and sustainable peace in the region.
During tensions in May, the U.S. assured that all issues would be addressed through dialogue, he added. He said Pakistan seeks meaningful and result-oriented dialogue. Pakistan desires peace based on dignity and regional prosperity.
