ISLAMABAD: Negotiations between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have officially commenced, as part of efforts to secure the next tranche of the country’s financial support package.
The meeting is being led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, along with a delegation from Pakistan’s economic team, including key officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
According to sources, a second round of talks between the IMF and FBR will take place at 1:00 PM today, where discussions will focus on provincial taxes. Key issues, such as property taxes levied by the provinces and the revenue generated from them, are expected to be key points of discussion.
Additionally, the tax framework for agriculture and details related to agricultural tax revenue will also be reviewed.
The IMF delegation, which arrived in Pakistan a few days ago, is currently engaged in review talks concerning the release of the $7 billion tranche as part of Pakistan’s ongoing loan program.
Earlier reports indicated that the IMF had acknowledged improvements in Pakistan’s economy, signaling that the review meetings are crucial for continued financial assistance.
