NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has called for urgent international action to ensure the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, highlighting the plight of people in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Addressing a United Nations Security Council debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, Ambassador Asim stated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are enduring systematic repression and violence under Indian occupation.

He accused India of attempting to illegally alter the demographic structure of the region in violation of international laws and United Nations resolutions.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir await the implementation of Security Council resolutions that guarantee their right to self-determination,” he emphasized.

Citing the recent escalation between India and Pakistan, Ambassador Asim revealed that Indian attacks had resulted in the deaths of 40 civilians and injuries to over 120. He noted that Pakistan acted with restraint during the conflict, targeting only military installations in response.

Turning to the Middle East, he condemned the attacks on hospitals in Gaza and urged the Security Council to respond immediately. He called for strict adherence to international humanitarian laws, protection for aid workers, and safety guarantees for United Nations personnel.

The ambassador’s remarks reflect Pakistan’s continued diplomatic engagement on key regional and global human rights concerns and its advocacy for stronger international mechanisms to protect civilians in war zones.
