UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council to take immediate and effective action to resolve the longstanding dispute of Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a session of the Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said all UN peace operations must be grounded in political solutions.

He said the Jammu and Kashmir issue has remained on the Council’s agenda for decades and deserves a fair and lasting resolution in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

“The issue of Jammu and Kashmir is not just a regional concern but a critical test of whether the Security Council can deliver on its own commitments,” Ambassador Ahmed said. “It is time for the Council to take meaningful steps in accordance with its own resolutions.”

He added that Pakistan hosts one of the oldest UN peace missions, reflecting the unresolved status of the Kashmir dispute.

He also underlined Pakistan’s substantial contributions to global peacekeeping, noting that the country has sent over 235,000 troops to 48 UN peacekeeping missions across four continents. Among them, 182 Pakistani personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice for global peace.

He called for unified and sustained political support from the Security Council for the success of UN peace operations.

He urged that Special Representatives of the Secretary-General be given full authority and that peacekeeping mission withdrawals be based on conditions on the ground, not preset timelines.

He also stressed the need to include troop- and police-contributing countries in the drafting and review of mission mandates to ensure their field experience informs policy decisions.

Ambassador Ahmed reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering support for a strong, inclusive, and politically-driven UN peacekeeping system that promotes justice and peace in conflict zones, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
