Pakistan Gears Up for First National Polio Vaccination Campaign 2026
ISLAMABAD: A formal media briefing was held today in Islamabad ahead of Pakistan’s first National Polio Vaccination Campaign of 2026, scheduled to take place from 2 to 8 February 2026.
The briefing was addressed by Ayesha Raza Farooq, Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication, and Muhammad Anwar Ul Haq, National Coordinator, Emergency Operations Centre.
The speakers provided a detailed overview of the current polio epidemiological situation, outlined the key operational and programmatic challenges, and shared the strategic direction and preparedness measures for the upcoming nationwide vaccination campaign.
The media briefing was convened at a critical juncture, as Pakistan has recorded a significant decline in polio cases.
A total of 74 cases were reported in 2024, compared to 31 cases in 2025, reflecting strengthened programme implementation, enhanced surveillance, and improved coordination between federal and provincial stakeholders.
Addressing the media, Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq stated: “The decline in polio cases demonstrates that sustained political commitment, data-driven strategies, and coordinated field implementation are yielding results. However, even a single case remains a threat, and complacency is not an option.”
Emphasizing the importance of the upcoming campaign, she further noted: “The February 2026 nationwide campaign is critical to closing remaining immunity gaps. Ensuring that every child under five is vaccinated requires continued public trust, community ownership, and the collective efforts of government institutions, partners, and frontline workers.”
The Pakistan Polio Programme values the critical role of the media in raising awareness about polio eradication.
Accurate reporting and active engagement help us to reach every community, strengthen public trust, and ensure that every child is protected. Your continued support is essential to achieving a polio-free Pakistan.
During the briefing, officials emphasized the importance of sustained political ownership, strong community engagement, and active public cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of the campaign.
The leadership of the National EOC also commended the dedicated efforts of frontline health workers, security personnel, and partner organizations supporting Pakistan’s polio eradication initiatives.
The briefing concluded with a reaffirmation of the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to interrupt poliovirus transmission and achieve a polio-free Pakistan.
